Natalia Bermeo, an Ecuadorian-American textile and fashion designer, earned her degree in knitwear design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2023. Her thesis collection, Lineas Poeticas (Poetic Lines), was showcased in FIT’s prestigious Future of Fashion show, earning the Macy’s Bold Representation Award for Best Culturally Inspired Look and recognition on Vogue Runway.
Deeply influenced by her Ecuadorian heritage, her work explores themes of identity, resilience, and the enduring impact of colonization. Her designs draw inspiration from her family’s memories of their hometown, Azogues, where stories of pain and perseverance are intricately woven into the fabric of her creative process.
Recently, she debuted a new collection at Omaha Fashion Week, blending Ecuadorian cultural heritage with futuristic themes. This marked a pivotal moment as she launched her label, Matriacá Studio. Her focus has since expanded to fostering community through collaboration with indigenous designers, celebrating traditional crafts, and honoring the artisans behind them. By navigating the intersection of tradition and innovation, she creates designs that are both ethically and sustainably crafted, redefining the value of cultural heritage in contemporary fashion.
